Pakistani Wedding Functions Explained
A Pakistani wedding is not one day but a season. Here is every function, in order, and who usually hosts it.
1. Dholki
Informal evenings of singing around the dholak, often for weeks before the wedding. Hosted at home by either family.
2. Mayun / Haldi
The bride or groom is pampered with ubtan and stops going out until the wedding. A small, joyful family event, usually in yellow.
3. Mehndi
The big colourful night: henna, songs, dances and friendly rivalry between the families. Often hosted separately by each side.
4. Nikah
The Islamic marriage contract, performed by an imam with witnesses. It may be held at a mosque, at home, or at the venue before the Baraat.
5. Baraat & Rukhsati
The groom's procession to the bride's venue, followed by dinner and the emotional Rukhsati, the bride's farewell. Hosted by the bride's family.
6. Walima
The reception hosted by the groom's family, usually the day after the Baraat, celebrating the new couple.
